How to use a butt plug
Using a butt plug is easy but requires a bit of preparation. Choosing the right material, design and size come first, but that's just part of the puzzle. To have a pleasurable experience and ensure you are safe, here are a few steps you need to take.
Prepare for pleasure
Now, you’re probably thinking, what’s to prepare for? When you decide to wear a butt plug, you may think about the feeling of wearing only, but don’t forget about factors like shaving, cleanliness, or friction.
Although it’s not mandatory, many people prefer shaving before going into anal play, but this is not mandatory. As long as you’re well-trimmed down there, you should have no problems. To ensure you’re clean, you can use wet wipes or a shower before you use the butt plug. For those who want peace of mind, an anal douche or enema can fully cleanse the anal canal, although it is not mandatory and shouldn't be done too often.
Finally comes lubrication. Those who have experimented with other sex toys are familiar with the process – the more you lube it, the better it feels! Since the anus doesn’t self-lubricate like the vagina, lube is a must. While some people prefer saliva because they like to feel the tightness, beginners risk the appearance of micro skin tears, which, when subjected to the bacteria in the GI tract, can lead to severe infections.
It’s important to remember the material of your butt plug when pairing it with lube. Silicone-based lubes are the most slippery for the longest time, even when small amounts are used. However, if you’ve already chosen a silicone butt plug, it’s best to avoid it and switch to a water-based lube instead.
For first-time insertion, using plenty of lube all around the anus is recommended. In addition, you can opt for anal suppositories, most commonly those with CBD. They help relax your anus and increase circulation in the area, allowing for easier insertion and better sensations.
Get in a comfortable position
Simple enough, butt plugs are easy to insert with your backside exposed and your anus stretched. While most people want to have control and use it alone for the first time, sometimes having a partner insert it for you can ease up the process. For example, letting your partner insert the sex toy while you're doggy style or on your back with your knees pulled to the chest is simple and quick. For solo play, the squatting position is the best choice, as it opens and relaxes the anus and gives the user extra agility.
Whatever position you choose, keep in mind that a little discomfort is to be expected at first. Some people opt for numbing creams during this time; however, they can work against you because you won’t be able to tell when your anus has had enough. For safety reasons, it’s best to avoid them completely until you get more used to the sensation.
Take it nice and slow
Whatever the purpose and end goal of your butt plug use are, going at a slower pace to play with it is preferred. Forcing it inside can cause pain and discomfort, and if you haven’t chosen the right lube, it can even lead to injuries.
The rate of the butt plug insertion also plays a big role in your experience. For example, if you use one with a narrow tip and insert it improperly, you risk hitting a nerve or going in too deep. On the other hand, a tapered tip allows bigger control over the amount and pace of insertion, allowing you to take it in only as much as you feel comfortable with.
If you cannot insert the sex toy on the first try, don’t worry. Beginners who haven’t experienced having something in their booty and sitting with it for a longer time will need a moment to adjust to the object both physically and psychologically. You can try lubing a finger and rubbing the anus before inserting it to make things easier. After you fit one or two fingers, you will get a bit more used to the sensation and go over to the butt plug. Take as much time and as many tries as you need to adjust the process to your comfort level.
Show your butt plug some care & love
After you’re done using it, cleaning the butt plug is the last and maybe the most important part of the process. Whether you use it alone or share the sex toy with a partner, this should be done nonetheless. Keeping the butt plugs hygienic is fairly easy, and the cleaning largely depends on their material.
Nonporous butt plugs are the easiest to upkeep, as you can boil them or disinfect and sanitize them. There’s also the option to put them in the dishwasher, but only on the top rack and without other dishes. Of course, this excludes the butt plugs that have a motor in them, despite their material.
Silicone sex toys, in particular, can be washed with just soup and warm water to disinfect. It’s even easier to keep the butt plug clean if you put a condom over it while using it. However, this isn’t recommended if you plan to wear it longer.
